"Crossing At Five Fingers"
Note: Scanner lost most of the subtle foam
details on top of the falls and below.
A collection of illustrations by artist Michael Mason
Look over the top of the fence. Across the street there is a small wood. And beyond the tall pines and thick maples of the wood, a bright field scattered with goldenrod, blackberries, and queens lace lies curled in the embrace of a creek.

As in the Festival of Lamps piece I struggled to get the values and intensities right while saving as much of the wash detail as possible in the highlighted areas (in this case the top of the waterfall).
However, my scanner just is not up to the task of picking up light hues *sigh*. I may go back and darken the hues on top of the falls and below to compensate a bit,but for now here is the new piece.
This piece was inspired by the N.C. Wyeth painting " The Captives" which he did for the book "Last of the Mohicans". (Published 1919 Charles Scribner and Sons).
Fantastic, Mike! As for your scanner shortcomings, don't change your art just to allow for it. Keep playing with the scanner settings or experiment with the scanned image in Photoshop. Your stuff is too delicate and wonderful to be changing just to allow for a technical flaw.
The only way I can get the scanner to pick up the more subtle tones is to crank the saturation up, which looks aweful...however that tells me that the scanner is at least picking up that information on most of my stuff (not all), and it's probably also the fault of the HP scanning software.
In short I need a REAL dedicated (read EXPENSIVE) scanner and photoshop. Thanks for the vote of confidence on my work.
Nicely flowing composition Mike!. I'm sure the sense of light, which looks nice already, looks evev better in person.
